A New Business Venture

The White Lion (Gwesty Llew Gwyn) had been on the market for a number of years, when threat of closure resulted in the villagers creating a committee, and eventually, purchasing the property as a new business venture. The campaign to raise money was incredibly successful, and resulted in over 60 shareholders, raising £535,000 for the purchase and renovations.

There are many plans over the coming years for the White Lion, which includes step 1 of re-opening the bar in December 2021. The property itself has huge potential, including a second bar, reception rooms, function room, kitchen, car park, a number of bedrooms, adjoining shop and house. Which means, plenty of ideas for the future – including a new kitchen, AirBnB and caravan area.

A Brief History

The White Lion Hotel has a long history – one which we’ll add to this website before long. Notably in its history though, was the visit from that of British Prime Minister David Lloyd George, who stayed over during some heavy snowfall which meant he was unable to go home. Of course, no one quite knows which room he stayed in.

For many years in its more recent history, the White Lion was a busy bed & breakfast, often hosting teams attending fishing world championships at Llyn Brenig, or those attending go-karting championships at Glan y Gors. Only a stone’s throw away from Snowdonia National Park, the hotel also enjoyed many tourists to the area during the busier summer months.

Always popular locally, the White Lion served bar meals, Sunday Lunch and was an often used location for local events. It was eventually sold by Lees Brewery, despite being the only pub remaining in the village about 10 years ago. We hope to see you soon!
