  • Dog-friendly Conwy pub site with grass pitches in Cerrigydrudion
  • A 10-minute drive from Llyn Brenig and 20 minutes from Betws-y-Coed
  • Views of Eryri National Park; pub meals served Thursday to Sunday
Cosy as cosy can be, Llew Gwyn Campsite occupies a small paddock at the back of a traditional community-owned pub: the White Lion (Llew Gwyn in Welsh), in the Conwy village of Cerrigydrudion. It’s a pretty spectacular location: blissfully rural, lusciously green and framed by views of the peaks of Eryri National Park (Snowdonia), which you can reach in about 15 minutes’ drive. This is a small site with mostly flat grass pitches, which makes for an appealingly peaceful experience. And the pitches come with a rather handy electric hook-up, meaning you can put the kettle on, make yourself a nice brew and finish that bestseller that’s got you hooked without having to wear a head torch. Nice. The kids (and the dog) have plenty of room to run around in, while the grown-ups might like to have a drink in the pub, of course, which is open from Wednesday to Sunday and arranges bingo nights, live music concerts and occasional craft workshops. For anything you need for the barbecue, there’s a grocery shop in the post office in the village (five minutes’ walk away), plus a couple of large supermarkets within a 25-minute drive. There’s also the option of a pub meal, of course – food is served from Thursday to Saturday, along with a traditional Sunday lunch service. A fish and chip van parks up in the car park on Wednesday nights, too. There are also several dining options along the A5 and in nearby towns like Bala (20 minutes).

Walking and cycling trails around the Llyn Alwen (five minutes’ drive) and Llyn Brenig (10 minutes) reservoirs lead to forested lookout points with splendid views of the water. Alwen also has a waterskiing centre, while Brenig is home to a breeding pair of ospreys (you can watch them from a bird hide), not to mention plenty of rainbow trout for fly fishing. With its stone houses and old bridges, the pretty village of Betws-y-Coed (20 minutes) is well worth a visit. Walk the tree-shaded Tan Dinas Path along the river Afon Llugwy (complete with an animal discovery trail to keep the kids interested), and continue all the way to Rhaeadr Ewynnol / Swallow Falls Waterfall. At Traeth Pensarn (40 minutes), a vast expanse of shingle on the north coast of Wales, you can have a swim, launch the canoe or admire the sunset.
